The E 1527-13 revision is the result of three years of discussion and debate among many dedicated stakeholders who spent countless hours at ASTM Phase I ESA Task Group meetings and on conference calls closely examining the standard and hammering out every word of the revision. The majority of professionals in the field do not actively participate in the process of updating E 1527—yet they need to be poised and ready to adjust their Phase I ESA practice as soon as the new standard takes effect (typically, immediately upon release).

We are always looking for ways to improve the accuracy and completeness of our flagship product, the EDR Radius Map report. So, when we were thinking about important information that might not make it into a normal government records search, but is critical for helping environmental professionals identify RECs, we thought about how historical sources like city directories might be integrated into database reports.

A few weeks ago, I blogged about the ASTM E1527 task group’s meeting in Atlanta, GA. At that time, the task group worked through about a dozen negative votes to the most recent ballot and many, many more editorial comments.

I was one of about 40 ASTM E1527 task group members who met in Atlanta on Wednesday, October 22 for the Committee Week Meetings. During a full day session, we reviewed 17 negative ballots and about 30 affirmative ballots with comments. What happens next? The focus of this post is to talk about ASTM’s process for balloting standards and how we deal with negatives as a task group.
